As a engagement present of sorts, I asked my friend Katie to pick my eleventh subject.
Flatlands was one of the original six towns of Kings County. The Dutch called it Nieuw Amersfoort, but I guess the English weren’t too hot for the name. It’s located in southeast Brooklyn.
According to The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn (Kenneth T. Jackson, Ed.), there is a 20-block area called Futurama located between Avenues J and L and 50th and 60th Streets. I’m interested to find out why this name was chosen, and what is there.
I will be out of town from Wednesday through the following Thursday. I’ll probably stretch this nabe out into two weeks, and research some topics of interest that I haven’t yet had time for. We’ll see.
