I stayed with my parents in Vermont this week en route to my college reunion. My dad was born on Friday the 13th, so I thought it fitting that he select my next subject. He chose a neighborhood with a shady reputation.
Brownsville is in the eastern part of Brooklyn. Once a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, it’s now mostly black; many of the former residents moved to Canarsie to escape the violence that was prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s.
Brownsville today is the site of several housing projects, and is home to rival gangs. I think I’m going to need a partner for this trip, and I probably won’t take as many pictures as usual.
For those of you worried I forgot to put together a post on my trip to Spring Creek, fear not: you can expect that tomorrow. (It was a busy weekend.)
