From the Brooklyn Eagle, July 1, 1947: HARD TO TAKE — [Brooklyn] Borough President [John] Cashmore, left, has a hearty laugh as Mayor [William] O’Dwyer, flanked on his left side by Assemblyman Irwin Steingut and Frank Nolan, Democratic leader of the first A.D., takes a last drink of “Flatbush water” at the valve turning ceremonies in Borough Hall’s local board room. In the background are political and civic leaders, most of whom have been in the forefront of the fight to have Flatbush supplied with city water. “Ye Olde Flatbush Cocktail” cooler, filled with the brackish water Flatbush residents complained about for years, provides visitors to note the difference between the old water and Catskill water available in another cooler in the room.
