House porn: Mill Island edition

My friend Harley and I went to Mill Island yesterday. We saw so much I’m going to break the recap into two posts. Since it’s Friday, I’ll keep it fun with some of the most ridiculous houses I’ve ever seen.

I’ll let most of the buildings speak for themselves, but I do want to share one story. We were intrigued by 2458 National Drive, which at 12,200 square feet is one of the largest houses in Brooklyn. As we approached the gated driveway, the door to the gate began to swing inward. ‘Creepy,’ I thought. ‘Maybe they’re inviting us in?’

Out stepped a ridiculously jacked Russian dude wearing sunglasses and a black t-shirt. We looked at him for a few seconds. “How ya doin’?” Harley asked. “Fine,” he replied, Terminator-style, his arms crossed over his chest. We took the hint.

All right, now on to the good stuff. Click any photo to enter the slideshow.

While I appreciate this ‘house porn’ pictorial, the area in question is called Mill Basin, NOT Mill Island. I live in currently reside in Sheepshead Bay, and grew up in Canarsie, and have spent a lot of time in Mill BASIN, throughout the years — I’ve never heard Mill Island as a name for this nabe.

While I haven’t driven through Mill Basin in quite some time, I had a friend who lived there, about twenty-odd years ago. This was college era, for me — and she was a sorority sister. She resided on National Drive, and we used to refer to her home as the ‘marble palace’.
There was a neighbor down the block who’d have his the exterior of his home professionally decorated/lit, and would hire a Santa to stand outside (he may have doled out candy canes, memory is fuzzy).

The mansions and McMansions seem to have gotten even more extravagant, to put it kindly. It’s amazing what ya can do with a lot of money and very little taste.
